Safety of beef gelatin with respect to BSE
At a conference on 2 and 3 April 1996 in Geneva, the World
Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the safety of gelatin
provided the usual manufacturing processes leading to inactivation
effects were applied.
In its report of 20 and 21 January 2000, the Scientific
Steering Committee(SSC) also mentioned the alkaline manufacturing
process of gelatin to ensure the safety of gelatin. Apart
from the so-called alkaline process, the SSC considers a
careful selection of raw materials, the availability of
records on the manufacturing process and of an HACCP plan
also as prerequisites to ensure maximum gelatin safety.
By submission by the Office International des Epizooties(OIE),
In the light of the available scientific knowledge, the
OIE recommends that, whatever the health status of an exporting
country with regards to BSE, importing countries should
not apply any restrictions on importation or transit through
their territory.
